Class Description

Age: 11-15 years old 1 hour Get ready to twist, bead, and build your way into the amazing world of DNA! In this interactive one-hour online science class, learners will explore the tiny molecule that makes YOU, you. We’ll break down the structure and function of DNA in a clear, middle-school-friendly way, then bring science to life by creating a colorful 3D DNA double helix model using pipe cleaners and pony beads. This isn’t just a lecture — it’s a hands-on mini lab where students learn by doing, building, and creating. Together we’ll: * Discover what DNA is and why it’s important * Learn about base pairs (A, T, C, G) and how they match * Explore how traits are passed from parents to kids * Build a 3D DNA model step-by-step * Practice thinking like real geneticists and scientists Learners will leave class with a stronger understanding of genetics and a fun, visual model they built themselves! Perfect for curious kids who love science, crafts, or hands-on projects. What We’ll Do in Class * Quick, engaging mini-lesson with visuals * Guided discussion and questions * Step-by-step DNA model construction * Show-and-share at the end Supplies Needed * Pipe cleaners (multiple colors) * Pony beads (4 colors to represent bases) * Scissors No prior science experience needed — just curiosity and creativity. Come ready to build, learn, and unravel the secrets of DNA together! This class meets live online for one session, offering learners a focused and engaging learning experience in a single meeting. The session is held via Pencil Spaces, making it easy for families to join from anywhere. Pencil Spaces is used to post announcements, supply lists, and any helpful resources, as well as to support communication between learners, families, and the teacher before and after class, so everyone feels prepared and connected.
