Class Description

Age: 9-13 years old 55 minutes How does a tiny seed grow into a plant? What's hiding inside a seed, and what does it need to begin growing? Let's investigate! In this hands-on science class, learners will become plant scientists as we explore the fascinating world of seeds and germination. We'll share our ideas, make observations, and discover what happens inside a seed as it begins its journey toward becoming a plant. Through guided discussions, visual explorations, and hands-on experiments, learners will investigate how plants get their start and what makes a seed so special. We'll begin by taking a closer look at what's inside a seed. Learners will carefully dissect a soaked bean seed to discover its different parts and explore how each part helps a new plant grow. They'll then use modeling clay or play dough to create their own seed models, bringing their discoveries to life! Next, we'll explore germination, the process a seed goes through to begin growing into a plant. Using time-lapse videos, learners will observe how roots and shoots develop, watch plants emerge from the soil, and investigate why plants grow the way they do. We'll make predictions, ask questions, and share ideas as we uncover the science behind these tiny but amazing beginnings. To wrap up our investigation, learners will set up their own simple seed germination experiment. They'll predict what will happen, observe changes over the following days after class, and discover how they can continue exploring plant growth at home. No prior science experience is needed, just curiosity and a willingness to investigate! At Wild and Unstructured Learning, we believe learning is all about asking questions, trying things out, and discovering something new along the way. Supplies: Learners will need soaked bean seeds, modeling clay or play dough, paper towels, water, and a clear jar or resealable plastic bag. This class meets live online for one session, offering learners a focused and engaging learning experience in a single meeting. The session is held via Pencil Spaces, making it easy for families to join from anywhere. Pencil Spaces is used to post announcements, supply lists, and any helpful resources, as well as to support communication between learners, families, and the teacher before and after class, so everyone feels prepared and connected.
