Class Description

COMING SCHOOL YEAR 2026-27!!! Age: 11-14 years old 50 minutes/day 2 days/week Welcome to a dynamic, confidence-building class where middle school learners grow into thoughtful readers & strong, expressive writers! Each week, students explore a fresh, engaging text together — from short stories & poetry to articles, historical fiction, persuasive pieces, & more. Through guided discussion & hands-on writing activities, learners strengthen the skills they need to understand what they read, think critically, & communicate their ideas clearly. This class blends academic skill-building with creativity, collaboration, & encouragement, creating a welcoming space where every learner feels comfortable sharing their voice. Together, we will: * Practice close reading & comprehension strategies * Discuss characters, themes, structure, and author’s purpose * Build critical thinking & analytical skills * Write across many genres including narratives, opinion pieces, reports, summaries, & creative writing * Develop organization, grammar, & clear communication * Gain confidence speaking, sharing ideas, & giving thoughtful feedback Each session includes interactive reading, group discussion, & a guided writing activity inspired by the week’s text. Students might craft a short story, write a persuasive argument, create poetry, respond to an article, or develop structured reports — keeping learning fresh and engaging. Because this is an ongoing class, every week stands on its own. Families can join anytime, & learners never need previous experience to participate. Lessons are taught at grade level with plenty of support, encouragement, & step-by-step guidance along the way. Whether your child already loves writing or is still building confidence, this class helps them grow into capable, creative communicators — all while having fun. All sessions are held through Pencil Spaces, making it easy for families to join from anywhere. Pencil Spaces is also used to post announcements, supply lists, assignments, & helpful resources, as well as to support communication between learners, families, & the teacher, keeping everyone connected and informed.
